A new offence of non-fatal strangulation came into effect today. It means police can specifically charge people with the crime. In the last 10 years in Northern Ireland, 6 women and 1 man, died by strangulation. Across the UK it's the second most common method of female murder. Victims who have been strangled by their partners are 8 times more likely to be go on to be murdered by them.
